Tips for writing abstracts for conference papers

Tips for writing abstracts for conference papers

The difficulty here is that you will probably be writing the abstract as a preamble to the actual paper, rather than subsequent to it. Here are some points to remember:
  1. Clarify in your own mind what is the purpose of the paper: what it is that you are going to do.
  2. Look carefully at the themes of the conference: note those that apply and frame your paper accordingly.
  3. Very often, the submission procedure will dictate the format and the number of words of the abstract. For example:

    • Title
    • Name of presenter, contact details
    • Category of presentation (e.g. workshop, research paper, short paper, poster etc.)
    • Conference themes addressed.
    • Key words that will help people deciding whether or not to participate to understand its focus.
    • Objectives/intended outcomes and activities for participants
    • The abstract.
  4. Stick closely to the length given. You will often have no choice in this matter, because if you submit electronically you will find yourself cut off in mid sentence as you reach the required limit.
  5. When writing the abstract, ask yourself the following questions:

    • What is the purpose of my paper? This should, as with any abstract, be a general definition statement about the objectives of your paper.
    • What approach am I using? I.e. am I reviewing the literature, describing a case study, supporting a research hypothesis, and if the latter, what is my research design and research methodology?
    • What are my findings?
    • What is the import of my findings?
  6. Choose your keywords carefully, making sure that they match the themes of the conference.

This is an interview done by the morning program in NTV 7.

My topic is about Visual Kei and J-Rock Fandom. So, people might wonder where on earth do they get those awesome clothes; platform boots, buckles, accessories... etc.
The shop is called Isocks. Its located in berjaya Times Square KL. Level 5. :)

Online Shopping

Good evening everyone..hmmm...basically, this is the very 1st time I blogging~ (since I was 20++)..aiksss...nvm, everybody has their 1st time in every thing...haha..
My research title is about "How Internet is slowly changing shopping behavior in Inti College students"...so do you guys like online shooping? Online shooping is actually very convenience and easy where you just need sit in your house comfortable and clikck your mouse then you can buy anything you want~ huhu...easy rite? and it is cheap too but some how it is risky cause your confidential information might be reveal~ However, I am using survey method to do the research among students in Inti..

Alright~my stomach pain again since yesterday night I makan chi cheong fan then 'food poison' makes me cirit birit for 2 days...tired d...nite every1..>.<

why? usper interesting!!!

oh just wanna share this...

Yawns. It is thought that a yawn works to send more oxygen to the brain, therefore working to cool it down and wake it up.

Tickles. You can’t tickle yourself because your brain distinguished between unexpected external touch and your own touch.

Boredom. Boredom is brought on by a lack of change of stimulation, is largely a function of perception, and is connected to the innate curiosity found in humans.

Sadness and shopping. Researchers have discovered that those experiencing the blues are more willing to spend more money in an attempt to alleviate their sadness. AHAHAH

Sleep
. While you sleep at night may be the best time for your brain to consolidate all your memories from the day.

No sleep
. It goes to follow…lack of sleep may actuallyhurt your ability to create new memories.

Snoring
. If you are snoring, you are not dreaming.

Red Enhances Men's Attraction To Women

Look what i found! =p Was looking for a journal about how huan brains are more attracted to colors than words.

LINKY here

The research provides the first empirical support for society's enduring love affair with red. From the red ochre used in ancient rituals to today's red-light districts and red hearts on Valentine's Day, the rosy hue has been tied to carnal passions and romantic love across cultures and millennia.

Room 101 Level 7

Findings and Discussion

And seriously, assignments and projects are not treating us well these days :( Anyhow, will pull it through. This week is an extremely important week because this week will be the week we conclude our research on our topics. Mind you, 30 marks! @.@

So to respond to Sarene's post, findings basically is to present the results you get from your methodologies. To make it tidier and more presentable, it is best to categorise your results, like what miss said :) But yeah, results are still making their way in and it's still best to conclude everything in one day and start compiling them up :)

Discussion is mainly to analyse your results, like what you stated in the findings part. It would be fun, but for me, it works the best when everything is in order so that it is easier for me to analyse on stuff and not overlook some important element as well in the same time.

Second last week of the semester! See how fast time flies when we are all busy with our stuff? It's just awesome :D Good luck with your research dear friends! And we can do it, I just know we can :P

Mental problem.....

I just did first draft for finding and discussion. But only 1 pages, can't believe 30 mark only one page of draft........
I am lacking of words in my brain.. cant think better word recently..

Do u guy know how do improve better?

Findings - Scene & Perfection Kids

I'm back people! Hohoho miss me? Okay lah fine la. Straight to the point. So today we all did findings and I have three methodologies. Two of my methodologies findings aren't supposed to be posted because I wanna give a surprise to everyone but the last methodology of mine is secondary research.

It's easy. All I do is to find as many videos and sites about these two culture of kids. Anyway, I wanna share with everyone about my findings.

Above singer is Jeffree Star; a very famous internet celebrity. He's way too perfect than anyone I guess. Used to be as one of the most famous perfection kids on Myspace, Star has finally made his dream came true.

Audrey Kitching - she's really a nice person. Besides, she's beautiful and perfect too. Kitching is now doing modeling and was once a perfection kid on Myspace.

Gabriela Ash - a Youtuber who teaches people in many ways to dress and be like a scene girl.

Well this is what I could share with you people at the moment!=)

Secondary Research

kawan kawan yang I sayangi :)

Click the link below and lead you there~
oh, there are advantages and disadvantages in there as well~ but make sure DONT copy or you'll get screwed. Refer, refer :D

(It's MY problem)

:edited:

Limitations of secondary research.
It is easy to find and collect secondary data., however, you need to be aware of the limitations the data may have and the problems that could arise if these limitations are ignored.
Secondary data can be general and vague and may not really help companies with decision making.
-The information and data may not be accurate. The source of the data must always be checked. -The data maybe old and out of date.
-The sample used to generate the secondary data maybe small.
-The company publishing the data may not be reputable.

enjoy~!

Secondary Research

hey peeps! Anyone using secondary research as the methodology?

Just in case if anyone doesn't have the definition of this term

"Secondary research occurs when a project requires a summary or collection of existing data. As opposed to data collected directly from respondents or "research subjects" for the express purposes of a project, (often called "empirical" or "primary research"), secondary sources already exist.

These secondary soures could include previous research reports, newspaper, magazine and journal content, and government and NGO statistics. Sometimes secondary research is required in the preliminary stages of research to determine what is known already and what new data is required, or to inform research design. At other times, it may make be the only research technique used.

A key preformance area in secondary research is the full citation of original sources, usually in the form of a complete listing or annotated listing."

literature review?

everyone is posting up links for others to read.. but i guess at this point, everyone is cracking their head to think about how to start, i guess reading the guidelines sometimes dont really help... i dont like reading... =S...

i am not sure if i am correct, but i am here to share how i write my lit review..
i started off with my topic, yes, and i state my assumption for the research, for example, i assume that the public perception towards Edison Chen changed dramatically after the sex photos of him leaked on the website.. then i find some proof to prove that my assumption is right. sadly, i did not find any.. but i found one that is opposite of my assumption, but the research was US based. so i pull in the Asian and Western cultural different to explain why the perceptions is different (ms. cheryl guided me on this).

after that, i work on my methodology, since i have two methods, i mention both of them but i only explain one of them. which is survey. because i can find something relevant to survey and not content analysis.. so i took the proofs that is related to this method, saying that to reach a mass samples, survey is indeed a good method of all..

for theory part, since i do not have any past research to rely on, i am basically using the sources to support my theory... like why does this theory do all sorts of thing...

i dunno if my lit review is correct, but i HOPE it is not wrong?

i hope what i have explained can help u guys in writing ur lit review!
do comment here to write about how u write ur lit review... i think reading from classmates' examples is always the easier way... =)

tmr is the day! haha...

and dont forget about theoretical framework kay! =)

it basically is expand and explain more from the proposal ones...

all the best in doing people!!

Potrayal of Gays & Lesbians

found a topic that related to jeswena's topic... :-)

http://www.unc.edu/~jermaine/images/portrayal.pdf

My Topic (Jeswena) !

Okayh, so I am doing a research on the portrayal of gays and lesbians/Homosexuals in Hollywood movies and the reaction of society on this portrayal. My research is about the kind of Homosexual portrayals there are in the media, such as in Hollywood movies nowadays. Compared to back then, where it was taboo to even have a Homosexual character in a movie. Lately, there have been more Homosexual oriented films as well as Homosexual characters in films.

Most Homosexual roles in movies nowadays are minor roles and the story is not based on these characters. In Malaysia, they would only screen these types of movies which contains Homosexual characters in the cinema and television. The movies which are Homosexual based and have Homosexuals starring in it as well as having the whole movie based on Homosexuality are not opened to be screened here in this country due to the culture, religion and other beliefs. It is a country where Homosexuality is definitely still a huge taboo.

Secret Revealed: How Crocodiles Cross Oceans

A West African dwarf crocodile rests under a heat lamp in a pool at the zoo on Friday, June 4, 2010 in Racine, Wis. Three crocodiles and one turtle arAP – A West African dwarf crocodile rests under a heat lamp in a pool at the zoo on Friday, June 4, 2010 in …
How did the world's largest living reptile, the saltwater crocodile, reach so many South Pacific islands separated by huge stretches of water despite being a poor swimmer?
Apparently, like a surfer catching a wave, these goliaths can ride currents on the ocean surface to cross large areas of open sea, researchers now reveal.
The saltwater or estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is a ferocious giant that can grow at least 23 feet long (7 meters) and weigh more than 2,200 pounds (1000 kilograms). These scaly monsters have been known to devour sharks, and even attack things they can't eat, often assaulting boats in the mistaken belief they are rivals or prey, biting down with nearly 2 tons of pressure - powerful enough to crush bone or punch through aluminum hulls.
These deadly predators hunt in tropical areas throughout eastern India, southeast Asia, northern Australia, and on an untold number of the islands in-between. Although these crocodiles spend most of their lives in saltwater, they cannot be considered marine reptiles the same way sea turtles are, because the crocs rely on land for food and water.
There were already many anecdotal accounts of large crocodiles sighted far out at sea, but nothing confirmed. Now, for the first time, using sonar transmitters and satellite tracking, scientists now find that saltwater crocodiles actually do ride surface ocean currents for long-distance travel, enabling them to voyage from one oceanic island to another.
"Because these crocodiles are poor swimmers, it is unlikely that they swim across vast tracts of ocean," said researcher Hamish Campbell, a behavioral ecologist from University of Queensland in Australia. "But they can survive for long periods in saltwater without eating or drinking, so by only traveling when surface currents are favorable, they would be able to move long distances by sea."
Crocodile river travel
Working at the remote Kennedy River in northeastern Australia, the team of scientists - which included the late Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter" - tagged 27 adult seawater crocodiles with sonar transmitters, employing 20 underwater receivers deployed along a 39-mile-long stretch of the river (63 km) to track the reptiles' every move for more than 12 months. They found both male and female adult crocodiles undertook long-distance journeys, regularly traveling more than 30 miles (48 km) from their home area to the river mouth and beyond into open sea.
The scientists also discovered the "salties" always began long-distance travel within an hour of the tide changing, allowing them to go with the flow. They halted their journeys by hauling out onto the river bank or diving to the river bottom when the currents turned against them.
The researchers originally were just aiming to investigate the territorial habits of the crocodiles and how they divvied up land among themselves.
"I never thought they would be making these long-distance journeys out to sea," Campbell told LiveScience.
Riding ocean currents
After they made their discovery on the river, Campbell and his colleagues re-analyzed archival data from the few crocodiles that have been satellite tracked while undertaking ocean travel. By overlaying the reptiles' movements with surface current estimates, they found the strategy of ocean-swimming crocodiles was similar to what they employed with rivers.
One satellite-tagged crocodile, 12.6-foot-long male (3.8 meters) - left the Kennedy River and travelled 366 miles (590 km) over 25 days, timing its journey to coincide with a seasonal current system that develops in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Another croc - a 15.8-foot-long male (4.8 meters) - traveled more than 255 miles (411 km) in only 20 days through the Torres Straits, which are notorious for strong water currents. When the reptile arrived at the straits, the currents were moving opposite to his direction of travel - he then waited in a sheltered bay for four days and only passed through the straits when the currents switched to favor his journey.
These findings could explain why this crocodile species did not split into many other species despite occupying islands across such a large range, where in principle populations could have been isolated and diverged from their relatives over time.
"Regular mixing between the island populations probably occurs," Campbell said. "Crocodilians have crossed major marine barriers during their evolutionary past."
Although scientists now know that salties seem to make long-distance journeys on purpose, "we presently do not know what these are for," Campbell noted. However, it was recently discovered that considerable numbers of the reptiles congregated to feast on an annual fish migration, so these long trips might be a way for the predators to satisfy their hefty appetites.
The scientists will detail their findings June 8 in the Journal of Animal Ecology.

Reflection of Racial Discrimination Content in Movies: Perception of Audience towards Racial Issues in the Malaysian Context

The topic i researching on is basically like what it says, that movies are one of the new media in shaping the perception of people these days. Therefore most of my research content regarding the movie genre are movies containing racial content in it. Currently have just finished with the background and am working on the theoretical framework and literature review by going through a few journals, articles and other materials such as journal of broadcasting & electronic media fall/2000, online newspaper star is regarding racial issues as well but in different type of media which is comic titled with comic book on race issues and other materials and stuff. Basically thats it for now and hereby ending the first virginity post of my update!

Signing off,
King of the World!

My topic!

SEX AGGRESSION & VIOLENCE IN FILM

Objective
1.  To discover the effects of the portrayal of sex aggression and violence in film.
2.  To gauge an understanding on the impact that these portrayals have on society.

Problem Statement
The media is growing increasingly ignorant in its transmission of film and the extensive representation of sex aggression and violence in film has spawned an adverse impact on society in a social context.

Theory
The Social Learning Theory

* Basically this topic is chosen to identify the above and to determine the way that these representation in film influence people's behaviours and attitude.. Also, to find out if it does increase crime rate like rape, molestation and abuse..

A literature review is a summary of previous research on a topic.

HOW TO DO IT?? simple... follow the steps

Sustainaility of Internet Relationship through Online Games.

aloha~

Well, i saw some of our classmate update their research paper's progress, so I though I shall do it too~although it's a bit late...

My topic:Sustainability of internet relationship through online games.

What's that? It's all about internet relationship and i'm going through the area of couples that are formed from online games.

I'm just curious, i read so far some news about girls got cheated through internet is all from the area of, instant chatting messenger.(sorry no offend) However, i had not heard about been cheated from online games...(if it is, do tell me please!an important source for me!) so, i'm just curious to know...

so far, i'm doing interview and it's quite a headache to find those couple that willing to talk about it. does is counted as a limitation of research? well, shall work harder on it...

good luck everyone!

Content Analysis E-Book Reference

I guess lots of us are using content analysis as one of our research method right? Here is an e-book on this methodology I find very detail and useful for us, especially for newbies who are not familiar with the method :)

Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology

I find the topic The Logic of Content Analysis Designs especially useful. Oh, and if you are unsure about the sampling for your research methodology, you can find it in this e-book as well under the topic Sampling. There are lots of brief explanation on the different types of sampling including the random sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, snowball sampling, convenience sampling and so on.

Oh and a small update on what I am doing now. Currently indulging in the research methodologies, as in finding out more about them; and of course, looking for more relevant articles or journals on my topic for literature review and understanding more on my chosen theories :)

Hope it helps :) And hope you enjoyed your weekend :P

agenda setting theory.

is there anyone applying agenda setting theory in the theoretical framework?
i have some information about it.. =)

media tenor
nc state uni website
uky
uni of twente
a first look at comm theory ( i think this site is quite good because it has a list of theory.. so u may find the theory u wanted from there. however, those are the simpler definition of all the theories..its the overview lar basically.)

ok! thats all for now.. =).. hope the sites help.. =)

Theory

Using the Behavioral Learning theory which consist of 3 types. basically wat we learn in PSY last sem.

(The one about the bell, the dog salivate thingy)

the Contiguity is by naturally elicit:

Classical conditioning is the impact of consequence.

voluntary behaviors (the dog)

Operant conditioning the opposite of Classical conditioning. involuntary behaviors.

thats about it i guess =) oo and help me out! =p
